Sildenafil Citrate TherapySildenafil Mechanism of ActionSildenafil Citrate is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that was originally developed as an antianginal agent but was found to be more effective in the treatment of impotence. It relaxes the arterial wall, leading to decreased pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure. It also increases blood flow to the penis. This mechanism of action does not directly cause penile erections, but affects the response to sexual stimulation. Flowing thru arteries, the blood in man's penis fills the spongy tissue to cause an erection. Sometimes a health problem can withhold this mechanism to works properly causing erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil Citrate works by increasing blood flow to the penis, causing penile hardness and makes to stay hard longer. It works in next 4 hours, only if you are sexually aroused. After sex your erection will go away. Sildenafil TherapyAs well as erectile dysfunction, sildenafil citrate is also effective in the rare disease pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) therapy. The Sildenafil therapy has not been approved for other, more common causes of pulmonary hypertension, such as pulmonary hypertension related to left heart disease (pulmonary venous hypertension), obstructive sleep apnea, or chronic lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, etc.).
